In considering merchant gift cards for your small business, here are some reasons to boost your ideas. First, these cards bring more exposure to your business. They are somewhat like leaving your business card with a customer, only better because you know that customer will be buying from you. Gift cards are different from gift certificates in that they are small plastic cards that look like credit cards. They are often colorful and eye-catching, and meant to be displayed in impulse buy sections such as next to the cash register. They can help your business make more money in various ways.


Gift cards can come preloaded or you can load them yourself. Many businesses carry a variety of preloaded cards in common denominations. Others let customers put however much they want on a blank card. The method you choose is a matter of preference, you could even do both. When a shopper pays with a gift card and there is change left over, it is left over on the card as the new balance. This means the customer will be returning to shop with you again. Sometimes, customers never do redeem the full amount of their gift card, which equals pure profit for your business.

These cards are usually purchased as gifts. Many people need to buy for someone but just aren't sure what the perfect gift would be. Giving a gift card lets the buyer have some control over the gift while letting the gift recipient pick choose what they want. In other words, it shows the recipient that you took the thought and effort to choose the perfect store even though they will be selecting their own merchandise. There are plenty of people who would much rather have a gift card as a present than an object chosen from a store by someone else. The gift card can be used, then the card itself can be put in a scrapbook or album as a keepsake.

Although merchant gift cards are often associated with big name brand businesses, smaller companies have them, too. It's easy to have your own gift cards created. There are a number of card services companies that create gift cards especially for your business regardless of its size, often for a reasonable price.
